What are Oaths and Affirmations?
An oath or affirmation is a sworn promise that the information you are providing is true. They serve the same legal purpose—the difference is in personal belief or preference:
-
Oath: A formal pledge to God or a higher power that your statement is truthful
-
Affirmation: A secular promise, made without religious reference, that your statement is truthful
Both carry the same legal weight and are used to verify the truthfulness of written statements.
The signature must occur in front of the notary, and the notary must witness you swearing or affirming that the contents are true.
